わたしたちは広い平野が見渡せる場所に出た。そこでエフィーは立ち止まった。 　わたしは、彼と歩いているうちに浮かんだ疑問を口にしてみた。 　――エフィー、あなたもあの森をとおり抜けてきたのかしら。だったら、その足も元どおりにすることも出来たのに。 　彼は私の問いにはすぐには答えず、前を見ていた。気高さを漂わせる横顔だった。 　「私の体に欠けているところあるからといって、私のこころが欠けているわけではないだろう？」 　わたしは聞いてはならないことを聞いてしまったと気づいた。 　「この体は、もともと神からお借りしたものさ。足はひとまず先にお返ししただけだ。そのうち誰でも体全部をお返ししなければならない時がやってくるだろう。だが、こころだけは私のものだ。失った体をいまさら取り戻そうとは思わないが、長年かけてつくりあげてきたこの自分のこころだけは、誰に渡すつもりもない」 　エフィーはそう言ってわたしの方を向いた。 　彼の言葉は、わたしの体の中にまっすぐ入ってきた。 　「いいかね。夜を人間の力で昼に変えることは出来ないが、夜に明かりを灯すことは出来るんだ。自分の力の及ばないことを出来ると信じたり望んだりすると、自分以外の者の意志がいつのまにか自分のこころに入り込んでくる。それはあらゆる不幸の始まりになるんだ。それに気づけば、不幸になることも、迷うこともない。そして――」 　やわらかく微笑みながら、彼はこう言った。 　「自分のこころを失うこともない」 　彼の話に耳をかたむけているうち、不思議なことに、眼の前の暗がりに覆われていた平野に、陽がさしてきた。久しぶりに見るほんとうの光だ。 　わたしは体の中にふしぎな力が沸き起こってくるのを感じた。 　「きみが行く方向が見えてきたようだ」 　わたしは、その言葉にこたえようとして傍らを見たが、もうそこには誰も居なかった。 　わたしは頷いて、ふたたび歩き出した。

We came to a place where we could look out over a vast plain. Then Ephie stopped. 　I spoke a question that came to my mind. ――Effie, did you pass through that forest? If so, you could reinstate your foot. 　He didn’t answer my question immediately, instead he looked in front. His profile diffused nobility. "If I lack part of my body, I won't have a lack of the mind." I noticed that I had asked something that shouldn't be asked. "My body is the thing which I borrowed from God originally. I just gave back a leg before time. The time will come for everyone to return their bodies. However, only the mind is mine. I haven't thought to regain my body which is lost at this moment, but only my heart, which has been built up over the years, I will never let anyone take it from me." 　As Ephie said that, he looked at me.　His words came right into my body. "Listen to me, It's impossible to change night into noon by a human's power, but It possible to light up the night. If you believe that you can do or you want to do something which you can no do by your own power, then another person will come into your mind before you know it. It is the beginning of all unhappiness. If you find it, you will not be unhappy and not get lost. And――" With smiling softly, he said. "You will not lose your mind." 　As I listened to his story, oddly enough, the sun started shining over the plain, which was covered with gloom in front of us. It was the first real light that I'd seen in a long time. 　I felt a strange power surging in my body. "The direction which you will go seems to be coming into view." 　I looked to the side to respond, but he had already gone. 　I nodded, I began to walk again.
